CHAPTER ONE
Fridolijn presents ‘Chapter One: Above The Fray’. A collection of 3 songs, in the singer's unique dreamy folktronica style.
Above the Fray is about being caught in a promise. An unexpected event, that makes you catch a glimpse of an alternative storyline for your life. Almost like a trick of light. Above the Fray is about being caught in the promise of that different story... The song that starts eerily thin, but dives into new territory as monk chants, and almost tribal drums set in during the chorus, echoing influences of Florence and The Machine, Joni Mitchell and Fiona Apple. The track was recorded in London by world renowned producer Troy Miller. Miller was drummer for Amy Winehouse, and produced albums by Laura Mvula, Gregory Porter, Becca Stevens and Jamie Cullum.
Fridolijn’s music is characterised by a unique style. With Chapter One Fridolijn makes a strong return, after releasing albums with her band Finn Silver, and her 2015 solo debut on V2 Records Catching Currents.
Fridolijn first appeared on the scene in 2011 with the release of 'Crossing the Rubicon', by her band Finn Silver. A self-released jazz, pop and hiphop-influenced debut, which reached top chart positions in Holland and Japan. It brought her to play international Festivals like North Sea Jazz Festival, Injazz and Über Jazz, and to the stages of Billboard Live Tokyo, het Concertgebouw Amsterdam and The Tabernacle in Londen. Itunes hauled her 'New Jazz Artist of the Year'.
Fridolijn recorded and toured internationally with British jazzband/MOBO winners Kairos 4tet, pianist Gideon van Gelder (Jose James), Cinematic Orchestra guitaritst Stuart McCallum(UK) and was host of the monthly vocal session at Amsterdam’s North Sea Jazzclub.
With a combined 3 million streams on Spotify, international shows and reviews in national newspapers and blogs Fridolijn has steadily been making a name for herself.
'Chapter One: Above the Fray' comes out on Fridolijn's own Freija Label on July 3rd 2020. The release will be launched with a livestream concert, live from Studio 150 Amsterdam, on Saturday July 4th. Live on Fridolijn.com
1. MERRY GO ROUND
Swirling synthesisers, distant drums and Fridolijn’s haunting voice circle round like a spinning carousel, making Merry Go Round sound like a daydream, slowly spiralling you inwards.
Fridolijn says: “This song came about during a walk in the British Peak District. There, in that violet haze of the low sun shining over the moors, I suddenly felt completely free from daily life. It’s as if I had hopped off the ever-spinning carousel that's always circling around the different seasons. That’s where the idea of a Merry Go Round was born. It’s a song on how to flow with these natural seasons - of rest, excitement, solitude or creativity, instead of going against them. It’s interesting how the song gains a whole new meaning during these evolving times.”

2. TRUTH OR DARE
He was in London, I was in Amsterdam. Two cities, not that far apart. There's an inconvenient patch of water in between (aka the North Sea), but no obstacles true love can't handle. Or so I thought...
It was a strange time where I felt like my life was divided in halves. Together / alone. Here / there. I was constantly weighing the pro's and cons of the situation on a scale. Is the joy of being together big enough to weigh up against the loneliness of being apart? Do the sparse moments of true connection weigh up against all those times my words get lost in translation?
What I realise now, is by all of this reasoning I was slowly losing touch with my intuition. I was trying to get a grip on something by rationalising everything. By always being in my head I was completely blurring my inner compass and I somehow forgot that some things can only be settled by the heart...

3. ABOVE THE FRAY
Above the Fray is a song about life taking an unexpected turn. Some (small or big) thing happens, and you suddenly catch a glimpse of an alternative storyline for your life. Almost as if it's a trick of light. Above the Fray is about being caught in the promise of that different story...
The song starts eerily thin and up close, but dives into new territory as monk chants, and tribal-like drums set in during the chorus. I recorded this track in London, working with producer Troy Miller. Troy was the drummer for Amy Winehouse, and produced the latest albums of Laura Mvula, Gregory Porter, and Jamie Cullum.
I met Troy in London in 2018, when pianist Oli Rockberger made our paths cross. After having visited Troy in his West London studio I knew I wanted to bring him a special song to record and produce. I had written Above the Fray with Danny and Dave a few months prior, and really wanted something beautiful to happen with it. I'm so proud to share the result of that experiment with you.
